Hyla through time
From first idea to global growth
It all started in the late 1980s, with a personal challenge and two determined engineers. The wife of one of them suffered from severe dust allergies. Every time the house was cleaned, especially with a vacuum cleaner using a traditional bag and filters, her condition worsened.
Idea
Engineers Janez Pogačar and Doro Erjavec wanted to create a system that would not blow dust around and could clean the air as well as the rooms. Instead of traditional filters and bags, which often allow dust to return to the air, they wanted to create a system where dirt and allergens would be captured and retained by water.
Prototype
Their idea first started to take shape in a small workshop in Ljubljana. In 1990, a prototype was made and initial tests at home showed that it worked. The air in the room became cleaner, and Erjavec’s wife could breathe deeply. Erjavec and Pogačar reached a crucial decision point.
Decision
Will their invention remain a home project? Or will they use it to help others?
They decided on the latter. Over the next two years, the performance improved with each new version. They named their invention HYLA, after the Latin name for the tree frog. This is a symbol of clean air and a healthy environment almost everywhere in the world.
Global Breakthrough
In 1991, they began to conquer the Slovenian market with their first serial products. Their international breakthrough came in 1993, when they joined forces with German entrepreneurs and direct marketing experts Wilfried Metzger and his partner. Together, they began to establish a global marketing and sales network, which grew by a few new countries each year.
Beginning of Growth
Over time, the small workshop grew into a real factory. Decades of thoughtful and organic growth gained momentum. Today, HYLA is one of the largest factories in the world in its market niche, and after three and a half decades, HYLA is the fastest growing company in it.

Looking Forward
Due to growing global demand, we have outgrown our current premises. That is why we are building a new business facility near Brnik Airport, which will house business, production, and storage areas on 22,000 square metres. When it is completed in 2027, we plan to hire another hundred new employees for production and development.
